Design Question
How does a hotel feel like a place in a world where every hotel looks alike?
Site & Context
The hotel is imagined in Porto's Ribeira district, behind the preserved façade of a historic building facing the Douro. A narrow, vertical urban plot, with a slim frontage, a deep plan and multi-storey circulation, shaped the design. With the façade protected and the interior free to be rethought, the project lives in the tension between history outside and a contemporary reading inside.
The biggest risk of the boutique category is that the word itself becomes a cliché. Hotel Riberia Nove answers by refusing standardisation. None of the 18 rooms is a copy of another, because local crafts such as azulejo and weaving cannot be mass produced, so each room carries its own variation.
Materials & Palette
Handmade azulejo refers directly to Porto's historic fabric, but it is concentrated in moments of welcome, such as reception and bathrooms, rather than scattered as decoration. Dark walnut and patinated brass give the hotel its aged but well-kept character. Indigo and terracotta come from Porto's own colour identity.
Design Intent
Hotel Riberia Nove was designed so that a guest could not mistake it for anywhere else.
